Government College University, Lahore
Government College University is one of the oldest colleges in Pakistan as well as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the Muslim world. It was established in the year 1864 as an affiliated college of Calcutta University under the leadership of Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner. The Government College University is a public sector university located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.
The organization has converted into one of the largest universities in Lahore having 10,808 students and 376 faculty members with 103 PhDs amongst them offering undergraduate and post-graduate programs specifically targetting on science and arts. Its department’s physics and mathematics has an international reputation.
The university achieved its second place in the medium group by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2013. It has the highest graduation frequency in the country, with an average of 95.5% per year. The GCU is known for its historical roots and attracted notable scholars such as Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, Abdus Salam and philosopher Muhammad Iqbal to studied and became an alumnus of the institute.
The motto of GCU is “Educating People for tomorrow”.
The GCU is affiliated with Higher Education Commission (Pakistan), Pakistan Engineering Council, Pakistan Bar Council.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS
- 12 years of field related education, passed with at least second division from any registered institution.
- 50% marks in entry test.

- 16 years of education with at least second division with aggregate 45% in the annual system and 2.5 cgpa in semester system.
- 50% marks in entry test.
The academic departments of the GCU provide a vast choice of subjects with pliable study methods that fulfill the requirements and attractions of the students at intermediate, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The University consists of the four faculties and a large number of departments and programs.
FACULTY OF CHEMISTRY AND LIFE SCIENCES
The GCU faculty of science and technology offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in the disciplines including Botany, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Microbiology, Zoology.
FACULTY OF ARTS & SOCIAL SCIENCES
The faculty of arts and social sciences offers programs in various fields including B.Com, Education, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Law, Management Studies, Mass Communications, Philosophy & IDC, Physical Education, Political Science, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Statistics.
FACULTY OF LANGUAGES, ISLAMIC & ORIENTAL LEARNING
The faculty of languages, Islamic & Oriental learning offer various programs in English, French, Islamic Studies, Arabic, Persian, Punjabi, and Urdu.
FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
The faculty of engineering offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Electrical Engineering only.
Government College University offers different scholarships for deserving students to pay their academic fees. Those scholarships include Need-Based Scholarships, Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) Scholarships, HEC’s Provision of Higher Education Opportunities for the Students of Balochistan and Fata, Killa Gift Scholarship, Internal Merit District scholarship, Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal, Hijri/Quaid-e-Azam Scholarship, Mohammad Raza Farooq Memorial Trust Scholarship and Ghulam Shabbir Scholarship.
