University of Karachi (UoK) also known as Karachi University (KU) is one of the oldest universities of Pakistan in Karachi. It was founded in 1951 as a federal public university in Pakistan. The University of Karachi is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities of the United Kingdom. The campus size of this university spans over 1200 acres.
This university is famous for its multidisciplinary research and famous alumni. Some of the alumni are, Dr. A.Q. Khan – Physicist Atta-Ur-Rehman – Geneticist Altaf Hussain –Politician Hussain Haro UOK started its teaching and research activities at two Faculties of Arts and Science.
This university was opened with the intake of 50 students, the university has now 53 Departments and 20 Research Centers and Institutes, under eight faculties of Arts, Science, Islamic Studies, Pharmacy, Management, and Administrative Sciences, Law, Education, and Medicine. At present, the enrolment of regular students is over 41,000 (Approximately) as on 30/06/2018.
There are over 700 teachers and more than 2100 supporting staff. Karachi University today is the biggest university in Pakistan. It contains eight faculties with which all the colleges of the city are affiliated. B.S., M.S., M.Phil. and Ph.D. classes under five of these faculties Arts, Science, Management, Administrative Science, Pharmacy, and Islamic Learning are conducted on the campus.
The Faculties of Medicine, law, and Education examines the students admitted to their affiliated colleges. Research programmers leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees are offered under all the faculties. The Science Faculty of UOK is consists of 23 departments and five research Institutes and is the biggest science center in the country.
The library of the UOK is one of the largest libraries in the country, it has a collection of over 360,000 books and has over 110,000 copies of national and foreign journals. There is a highlight of the UOK library is Quaid-i-Azam’s personal collection of books and many of which carry his own signature. In 1995 the University of Karachi introduced evening programs to provide an opportunity for the in-service peoples and professionals to pursue higher education.
