The DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Scholarship provides funding for two-year master’s degree programs and a limited number of doctoral degree programs. Successful candidates can expect to make new acquaintances, acquire language skills, immerse themselves in new cultures, and advance their professional aspirations. It’s important to note that DAAD scholarships cannot be used for degree programs that don’t meet certain requirements, which are outlined in the universities’ module overviews on their websites. Additionally, DAAD offers other scholarship programs, such as those for applicants specializing in History of Architecture or with scientific projects. The DAAD scholarship offers the following benefits to recipients, depending on their academic level:

  • Monthly payments of 934(currently 861) euros for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates.
  • Coverage of health, accident, and personal liability insurance.
  • Travel allowance unless the candidate’s home country or another funding source already covers this expense.
  • Additional benefits may be available in some cases, such as a monthly rent subsidy or a monthly allowance for accompanying family members.

 

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must meet certain academic requirements and demonstrate their ability to successfully complete a study program in Germany (e.g., high performance on previous academic exams and language proficiency).
  • They should have a four-year Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, at least two years of professional experience, and be able to show their motivation for development-related work.
  • They should also demonstrate a commitment to taking on social responsibility and driving change in their personal and professional circles following their scholarship or training.
  • Works in a public authority or state/private company in a developing country, with a focus on development policies in technology, economics, or social areas.
  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in a related subject that was earned in a normal four-year period.
  • Has achieved excellent academic results, ranking in the upper third of their class, and has at least two years of relevant professional experience after obtaining their Bachelor’s degree at the time of application.
  • The academic degrees obtained should not be more than six years old.
  • Applicants who have resided in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of the application deadline will not be considered.

 

How to Apply

  • Applications must be submitted in either English or German.
  • Candidates can apply for a maximum of two master’s courses from the list of eligible courses.
  • The DAAD application form for Research Grants and Study Scholarships should be filled out only once, and the first and second choices should be clearly stated.
  • Applicants should write a single motivation letter for both the university courses, indicating their first and second priority choices.
  • The completed DAAD scholarship form, along with the motivation letter and other required documents, should be sent to the two selected universities, not to DAAD.

  • Letter of motivation, maximum 2 pages, personally signed, and referencing current/past occupation. If applying for multiple courses, list in order of priority, and include a motivation letter for each course.
  • Full curriculum vitae, personally signed, and dated, using the Euro pass form at http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/. Include information about the field of study and job experience, if applicable.
  • University degrees acquired with an explanation of the grading system
  • Transcript of records
  • Recent language certificates for English and/or German
  • One letter of recommendation signed and recently dated by the last employer, if applicable.
