PhD Political Philosophy

Political philosophy is a branch of philosophy that studies the nature of politics, government, and the relationship between people and the state. It examines a wide range of topics, including, democracy, freedom, constitutionalism, political obligation, justice, liberty, property, rights, law, and authority. Political philosophy is closely related to other disciplines, including history, philosophy, politics, and political science. Some well-known political philosophers include Aristotle, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Rawls. Political philosophy, or political theory, is the philosophical study of government, addressing questions about the nature, scope, and legitimacy of public agents and institutions and the relationships between them. Political philosophy is a branch of philosophy, but it has also played a major part in political science, within which a strong focus has historically been placed on both the history of political thought and contemporary political theory (from normative political theory to various critical approaches). Political philosophy has been practiced for as long as human beings have regarded their collective arrangements not as immutable and part of the natural order but as potentially open to change, and therefore as standing in need of philosophical justification. It can be found in many different cultures, and has taken a wide variety of forms.
