MS Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound is a non-invasive method of imaging. Ultrasound probes, known as transducers, emit sound waves with frequencies above the edge of the human ear, but most transducers currently in use operate at much higher frequencies in the megahertz (MHz) range Most ultrasound studies are a the diagnosis is applied to the skin. However, the probe can be delivered through the abdominal cavity, uterus, or blood vessels to improve image quality. In addition, ultrasound is sometimes used intraoperatively by placing a sterile probe at the operative site during surgery. Diagnostic ultrasound can be further divided into anatomic and functional ultrasound. Anatomic ultrasound provides images of internal organs or other structures. Functional ultrasound combines information such as muscle or blood motion and velocity, physical characteristics such as muscle elasticity or stiffness and anatomical images to create “information maps”. These maps help physicians identify functional changes/differences in a system or organ.
