MS Clinical Fellowship in otology and Audio-Vestibular Rehabilitation

Otology is a branch of medicine that studies normal, pathological anatomy and physiology of the ear (hearing). Otology also studies vestibular sensory systems, related structures and functions, as well as their diseases, diagnosis and treatment. Otologic surgery generally refers to surgery of the middle ear and mastoid related to chronic otitis media, such as tympanoplasty (ear drum surgery), ossiculoplasty (surgery of the hearing bones), and mastoidectomy. It also includes surgical treatment of conductive hearing loss, such as stapedectomy surgery for otosclerosis. The term "vestibular" refers to the inner ear system with its fluid-filled canals that allow for balance and spatial orientation. Some common vestibular disorders include vestibular neuritis, Ménière's disease, and nerve compression. Vestibular rehabilitation (VR), also known as vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), is a specialized form of physical therapy used to treat vestibular disorders or symptoms characterized by dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, posture, and vision. Vestibular dysfunction can exist unilaterally, affecting only one side of the body, or bilaterally, affecting both sides.
