Convent of Jesus and Mary, Murree
The Convent of Jesus and Mary, Murree is a school for girls situated in Murree, Punjab. Established in 1876, by a French woman named Claudine Thévenet, foundress of the Religious of Jesus Mary, the school’s sole aim was to educate young girls to make them good housewives and women in life. Despite, this is a convent school, Islamic studies are also studied here. In 2007, after 135 years, the school announced that it would no longer operate as a boarding school, that stunned many people. In an interview to “The News”, Sister Mercedes, principal of CJM said;
“We have served students all over the country for 135 years. It is time now to concentrate on the people of Murree. This town has also changed as it has expanded and there are many children today. We had 160 girls in the boarding and right now we have 400 day-scholars. There is no limit on the number of students that will join the school”
The President of Pakistan approved the conferment f Sitara Quaid-e-Azam to Sister John Berchmans Conway, a retired school teacher for her education services and the promotion interfaith harmony in Pakistan.
Applications are received each year for the admission in the Convent of Jesus and Mary. Out of these, only a limited number of applicants can be accommodated in the Prep. 1 Class. Christian children and younger sisters/brothers of pupils currently studying in this School, are given the priority. A selection test is given to all candidates. After the test, the pupils are chosen purely on merit.
