Kohat

Kohat is one of the largest cities in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The city is rapidly expanding, with a population of approximately more than 0.2 million. It is believed that the foundation of this glorious city was laid by the ancient King of Buddhism named Raja Kohat. Languages: Pashto and the Hindko Kohati dialect are the languages spoken in the city. 

Climate: May, June, July, and August are the warmest months on average. The months of October, November, and December are dry in Kohat whereas winter is at its peak in January.

History and Archaeological Sites: This region is famed as the heart of the dominant Pashtun tribe called Bangash, living here for hundreds of years. Moreover, the city is centered by a British fort, multiple bazaars, and a military cantonment.

  • It is believed that the foundation of Kohat was laid by a Buddhist King Raja Kohat and Another Raja of Buddhism extended it towards the north of the city. The Raja of Buddhism constructed many roads, which Mughal Empire later used. The ruins of fort Adhe-e-Samut are still there to express the glory of their empire.
  • In Kohat, the first inhabitants were Orakzai, Khattak, and Bangash override them and dominate over here infertile lands.
  • The first historical record of the city comes from the Baburnama autobiography of Mughal emperor Babur who invaded this region. 
  • In the mid 18th century, Kohat was annexed to the Durrani empire. Later on, following the downfall of the Durrani Empire, it came under the rule of Pir Muhammad.
  • At the start of the 19th century, Kohat was taken over by the glorious Sikh empire of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and later on, Sultan Muhammad defeated the Sikh rule and annexed it with the Muslim empire.
  • After the defeat of Sikhs at the hands of the British Raj and the whole Punjab, Kohat became a part of the British colonial rule in 1849.

Dam: Recognized by Ramsar Convention, Tanda Dam in Kohat is located on Tanda Lake. It became functional in 1967.

Tanda Wildlife Park: 

It has the distinction of being the largest Wildlife park of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is the habitat of a wide range of animals which include birds, mammals, and reptiles. The concerned authorities are taking care of it as no one can cut the trees and other activities that could potentially harm the wildlife. The park comprised the natural habitat of chinkara, urial, and hog dog. Within the park, Kotal Pheasantry aims to ensure a conducive environment for breeding wildlife species like silver pheasant, golden pheasant, reeves pheasant, peacock, etc. The ring-necked pheasant, silver pheasant, peacock pheasant, and white pheasant are adorable species of the park.

  • The Kohat-Jand railway line terminates in Kohat, which offers a daily train service to Rawalpindi. 
  • Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar is the closest airport with commercial services. 
  • The British built a runway at Kohat Airbase, which the Pakistan Air Force now uses.
  • The N-55 Indus Highway connects Peshawar and Karachi, and the N-80 highway, which connects Kohat and Islamabad, both pass through Kohat. 
  • The 1.9-kilometer Kohat Tunnel, which connects the southern areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Peshawar, was completed in 2004. The tunnel, which was built with Japanese cooperation, reduces the travel times across the Kohat Pass.
